Research Project: Medical Device Vulnerability Discovery & Patient Safety

CYBERSECURITY RESEARCH · VULNERABILITY DISCOVERY · RESPONSIBLE DISCLOSURE · PATIENT SAFETY

About the Research

As medical devices become increasingly interconnected, their integration with hospital networks, software platforms, and remote monitoring systems introduces new cybersecurity risks with potentially significant consequences for patient safety. Although these technologies have transformed modern healthcare, vulnerabilities within their hardware, software, and communication protocols may create opportunities for adversarial exploitation.

This research focuses on the proactive identification, analysis, and responsible disclosure of cybersecurity vulnerabilities in medical devices, with the objective of discovering security weaknesses before they can be exploited by malicious actors.

Through controlled security assessments, adversarial testing, and technical vulnerability analysis, the project investigates potential weaknesses in medical device architecture, embedded systems, network communications, authentication mechanisms, and supporting technologies. Particular attention is given to vulnerabilities that could compromise device availability, integrity, confidentiality, or essential clinical functionality.

Central to this effort is the recognition that medical device cybersecurity extends beyond the protection of information systems. A compromised medical device may directly affect clinical operations, disrupt treatment, or introduce risks to patient health and safety.

The research therefore emphasizes coordinated vulnerability disclosure, collaboration with medical device manufacturers, and the development of practical mitigation strategies. By identifying vulnerabilities and communicating findings through responsible disclosure channels, the project seeks to strengthen the security of medical technologies while contributing to a more proactive and collaborative approach to healthcare cybersecurity.

The ultimate objective is to identify and address security vulnerabilities before adversaries can exploit them, helping ensure that the technologies designed to preserve human life do not inadvertently place it at risk.

Next Steps for Further Research

The next phase of this research will focus on expanding practical vulnerability discovery efforts, developing repeatable assessment methodologies, and improving the translation of technical security findings into meaningful patient safety protections.

Primary areas of investigation include:

  1. Medical Device Vulnerability Discovery: Conduct authorized security assessments of medical devices in isolated laboratory environments to identify previously undocumented vulnerabilities in firmware, software, hardware interfaces, and network communication protocols.

  2. Adversarial Testing and Attack Surface Analysis: Evaluate medical device architectures from an adversarial perspective, identifying potential attack paths, insecure configurations, authentication weaknesses, and opportunities for unauthorized access or manipulation.

  3. Embedded Systems and Firmware Security: Investigate vulnerabilities affecting embedded operating systems, firmware components, software dependencies, and update mechanisms. Examine how legacy technologies and limited patching capabilities contribute to persistent security risks.

  4. Coordinated Vulnerability Disclosure: Establish repeatable procedures for documenting, validating, and responsibly communicating discovered vulnerabilities to manufacturers and appropriate coordinating organizations. Prioritize remediation and patient safety before public technical disclosure.

  5. Clinical Risk and Patient Safety Implications: Examine how identified vulnerabilities could affect device functionality, treatment delivery, clinical workflows, and patient outcomes. Develop methods for evaluating cybersecurity findings in the context of real-world clinical risks rather than relying exclusively on traditional technical severity ratings.

  6. Medical Device Security Standards and Regulatory Gaps: Assess existing cybersecurity requirements, manufacturer security practices, and vulnerability management frameworks to identify opportunities for improving security throughout the medical device lifecycle.

  7. Automated Vulnerability Discovery: Investigate the use of fuzzing, automated security testing, and AI-assisted vulnerability analysis to improve the efficiency and scalability of medical device security research.

Long-Term Research Objective

To develop and validate a repeatable, patient-safety-centered methodology for discovering, assessing, and responsibly disclosing medical device cybersecurity vulnerabilities. This research seeks to strengthen collaboration between independent security researchers, healthcare organizations, manufacturers, and regulatory bodies while reducing the likelihood that exploitable vulnerabilities will remain undetected in clinical environments.
